Saturday’s Creighton Bluejay Basketball White Out game against the Wichita State Shockers now appears to be a must win for the Jays to take the regular season title. Just two short weeks ago, the Jays were riding a nine game win streak, held the conference lead and looked to be a shoe-in for the Missouri Valley regular season title. The Jays also appeared to be destined for a low single digit seed in the NCAA Tournament. Since then, the Jays are 1-2. This includes a home win against Illinois State and road losses to Northern Iowa and Evansville. The interesting part is the Illinois State game was probably the Jays’ best performance of the season. It was forty minutes of nearly perfect basketball. The Northern Iowa game was barn burner and tough loss. The Jays were down five with 24 seconds to play, tied the game with 6 second to play on a three point basket, only to lose on a last second three pointer. I’d rather not revisit the Evansville game.
Over the same time, the Wichita State Shockers are on a three game win streak. This includes a win at Missouri State and wins at home against Indiana State and Northern Iowa. Looking back a bit further, the Shockers have won eleven of their last twelve games. The Jays (11-3) now find themselves a game back of Wichita State (12-2) with four confernce games to play. The Jays have to assume the Shockers will win their last three regular season games. So the Jays will have to finish 4-0 to finish to take the regular season title.
