Two weeks ago I previewed the end of the college baseball season for both the Creighton Bluejays and Nebraska Cornhusker baseball teams. At that time Nebraska was working to even make the post season tournament while Creighton was mired in last place and set to enter tournament play as the last seed.
This week, both Creighton and Nebraska are alive in their respective tournaments. Creighton is not only alive, but well. CU is set to play Southern Illinois in the conference tournament final tonight at 7 p.m. with a bid to the NCAA tournament on the line. Creighton used a three game winning streak fueled by some hot bats to make its run.
Nebraska lost a heart breaker to Michigan State to open play in the Big Ten tournament. NU mounted a furious 9th inning comeback that fell short when MSU second baseman Ryan Jones snared a line drive to end the game and strand the tying run at third.
Nebraska now is tasked with fighting through the loser’s bracket for its shot at the NCAA tournament. It beat Penn State to set up an 11 a.m. match up today with host school Ohio State. Both NU and CU have their work cut out for them but hopefully we will be talking about NCAA regional play for both.
